Singapore's talent market in 2026: still tight, now more selective

Singapore's labour market has had a long run of steady growth, and 2026 has kept it going. Total employment rose by 11,400 in the second quarter, the nineteenth quarterly increase in a row, and unemployment stayed low at 1.9% overall and 2.9% for residents in June. Yet anyone hiring or job-hunting at senior level will recognise that the market feels harder than those headline numbers suggest. Both things are true at once.

Demand is resilient, but cooling at the edges

There were 68,600 job vacancies in June 2026, down from 73,300 in March. That still works out to about 1.48 vacancies for every unemployed person, so in aggregate there are more jobs than jobseekers. Retrenchments rose, however, to 4,620 in the quarter, and the share of retrenched residents who found work again within six months fell from about 61% to 55%.

For employers, that means a slightly larger pool of experienced candidates is available. For professionals, it means a move made from a position of strength, with skills to match, is far better than one forced by circumstances.

New roles, not just replacements

MOM's Job Vacancies 2025 report found that almost half of all vacancies were newly created positions rather than replacements. The share was highest in Information & Communications, Professional Services and Financial & Insurance Services. Organisations are building capabilities they did not have before, which is why job descriptions increasingly mix technical, commercial and change-management skills.

The real constraint: specialised skills and experience

The hardest roles to fill are not the most junior. Among PMET vacancies left unfilled for six months or more, about three in four required at least two years of experience, and employers most often blamed a shortage of specialised skills. The skills most in demand include software development, systems analysis and data analytics, alongside problem-solving, adaptability and comfort with AI-enabled tools.

Where resident hiring is growing

In the second quarter, resident employment grew in Health & Social Services, Professional Services, Financial Services, Information & Communications, Public Administration & Education, and Transportation & Storage. Three of TalentEdge's four sectors sit directly inside that list, and the fourth, Business & Sustainability, cuts across all of them.

What this means for professionals

  • Lead with evidence. Employers screening for experience want measurable outcomes: teams led, budgets managed, systems delivered.
  • Close one specific gap. A targeted qualification or project in data, AI, sustainability or healthcare operations often matters more than a broad credential.
  • Move with timing. Hiring intentions rose in July, with nearly half of firms planning to recruit in the next three months.

What this means for employers

  • Expect to compete on scope, not just salary. Fewer firms plan wage increases, so growth, flexibility and development carry more weight.
  • Hire for adjacent experience. Strong mid-career professionals who are already upskilling can close a gap faster than a long search for a perfect match.
  • Redesign before you recruit. When a role keeps going unfilled, the role itself may need reshaping.
